On August 3, Gilda’s Club Middle Tennessee celebrated its 21st birthday. Around the Clubhouse, people keep joking that we’re “finally legal” – because who could resist? But joking aside, what a remarkable milestone: Twenty-one years of one-on-one and group support. Twenty-one years of activities and educational events. Twenty-one years of creating community, so that no man, woman, child or family has to face cancer alone.
As Interim CEO, and over the years as both a Board member and donor, I’ve had the honor and privilege of hearing first-hand the impact Gilda’s Club has on those we serve. The stories behind what brings people to Gilda’s, why they lean in, and the life-changing ways they benefit from being a part of our community are heart-wrenching, inspiring and encouraging all at once. These are the stories that remind us daily of the importance of the work being done behind our red door – throughout the last 21 years and to this day.
In honor of the many wonderful people who come together to make our community what it is, throughout the year, we will share with you 21 of these stories. This program is called “Everyone Has a Cancer Story” and we want to give our sincere thanks to the Gilda’s Club members, volunteers and staff who have agreed to be a part of it. Their willingness to share so openly and honestly for the sake of helping others connect is such a gift.
As part of the program we invite you to do two simple things.
1. Read our stories (We’ll be adding new ones monthly) and pass them along to family and friends. You can do this via social media, email or even word of mouth.
2. Please help support our programs financially. A donation of $20/month provides a child access to expressive arts activities that teach relaxation techniques and ways to improve family communication.
As always, we are grateful for your support.
